OpenAI announced Daybreak, a package of cybersecurity tools and partnerships aimed at moving AI-assisted security from vulnerability discovery toward patching. The company said Codex Security can scan codebases, validate findings, generate remediation evidence, and help produce patches, while GPT-5.5-Cyber is being released in limited form to trusted defenders. OpenAI also introduced Patch the Planet with Trail of Bits, HackerOne, Calif, and maintainers, saying more than 30 open-source projects are participating and that early work has already produced patches and reusable testing workflows.
Key details: Published June 22, 2026, OpenAI announced Daybreak as a cyber-defense initiative, Codex Security is being updated for defensive security workflows, GPT-5.5-Cyber reached 85.6% on CyberGym in OpenAI's single-model evaluation, Patch the Planet has more than 30 initial open-source project participants.
Why it matters: The announcement shows frontier labs trying to make advanced cyber models useful to defenders while managing the same dual-use risks that make these systems sensitive.
